Artist’s Statement
As a wildlife sculptor I rely on my deep connection with nature and the universe to guide and inspire my creativity. An avid outdoorsman and naturalist, I cherish the profound influence that my life amidst the natural splendor of the Northwest has on my work. Sometimes that influence is dramatic, but often it is a matter of tuning in to the richness of a quieter moment: along the path to my studio a family of ravens appears, piercing the silence as they pass through the junipers chuckling to each other in deep, melodious tones. They seem to be playing a game, but are ever vigilant for an easy meal, or keeping a watchful eye on the osprey perched in a tall pine overlooking the pond, or the covey of quail now alert to the sudden break in the morning’s silence.
These natural moments are an endless inspiration to me. Once in the studio I strive to bring that wild presence to life in my work, so that each piece evokes the special awareness that comes of being in nature. I see wildlife sculpture as an expressive language, in which I experience my clearest and deepest communication. I find such satisfaction in creating the wind under an eagle’s wing or the depth of rage on the face of an Alaskan brown bear sensing a territorial threat. To really feel the animal’s spirit in this way is essential in giving each sculpture a living presence in any space, revealing the power and beauty of the true wildlife encounter.
Many of my subjects live at the top of the food chain, but I often honor nature’s more delicate figures. Exploring the full range of life in the wild, my sculptures echo those pristine moments in nature when the subject, unaware of human presence, goes about life in its own distinct way. It is a great joy to be able to share these moments through my work.
Working with wood is another way I invite nature to unfold in my art. Hardwoods are my medium of choice for their organic properties and stability, and I can think of no better material for representing wildlife. The unique nature of the wood has a great deal of influence on each sculpture, giving movement, direction, identity and life to my creations. Remaining ever open to possibility, I let the form emerge with the wood’s inherent strength and integrity. As I sculpt this once living medium, the spirit of the tree is reborn in the piece.
